Player's Review

"Burn up the track on the straights and downshift into neck-wrenching hairpin curves with Super Monaco GP. Set your wheels alight, screaming around the most demanding tracks on earth - The Formula that takes you to pole position."

The C64 had some pretty good driving games around 1991 like Chase HQ22, Power Drift, Turbo Outrun and Outrun Europa and if you just saw screenshots of Super Monaco you would think it was gonna be alright too. However that is not the case and it appears the developers gave up after drawing the title screen and adding a nice piece of music.

The Spectrum version looks well done with nice presentation so it's a bit strange that the C64 game was just put out before it was finished. Before each race there is a qualifier.
You race through France, Brazil, Spain, Monaco Dry and Wet. Completing these, the game does not end and instead goes onto some bugged tracks. The game is seemingly endless.

If you crash with a game over you will start over on that track. The results on the score board don't mean a whole lot as they don't seem to be building up to an overall championship result. Other bugs include lapping the opponent cars which causes the game to get confused about your position number. There doesn't seem to be any difference in the wet and dry races apart from the sky colour.

The actual racing mostly plays ok. Its fast and the road moves smoothly. If you through yourself into the corner just as it appears then you'll likely make it round without need to downshift. Having the rear view is a nice tough but not that useful and probably slows the game down. Overall it is pretty tragic that the game was put out in this stage and not really completable lacking the polish (for lack of a better word) than the Spectrum game.
