Player's Review

""WORLD WIDE STUPIDITY EPIDEMIC LINKED TO SPACE ALIENS IN PHONE COMPANY.

The phone company is reaching out and touching people everywhere -- and leaving them with the I.Q. of a turnip...

To Zak McKracken, its just another day at the office. He's the roving reporter who's scoffed by his peers. Dreaded by his creditors. And relished by readers of his tabloid sleaze. But one night in bed, Zak McKracken uncovers evidence of an extra-terrestrial plot. And unlike all the other "alien conspiracies" his tabloid churns out with regularity, this one's for real!"

The second games from Lucasfilm Games to utilise the scumm engine and again released firstly on the Commodore 64. Like in Maniac Mansion, you take control of multiple characters although this time there is no choices to be made and there usefulness and abilities are fixed. There are still ways to die in the game as well as dead ends if a needed item to progress is lost or destroyed. The story is more linier with just the one ending with set tasks needed to get there. You are still free to complete the puzzles in any order you like with some variation in their solutions.

There is a lot of moving around between areas and a lot of the time requires flying which costs money. While money isn't a big problem in the game with ways to get more it can potentially run out. Some puzzles in the game require codes to progress so its a good idea to note any solutions given to you during play as you will be requires to use them to proceed at some point. There are a few annoying labyrinth like areas in the game requiring the drawing of a map or finding a pre made one online to help you navigate them.

There are many walkthrough guides to this game each with different approaches and routes through the game. This longplay mostly follows the walkthrough guide by Selmiak with some deviations to show some extra dialogue and not needed for completing the game making the longplay a little longer than it could otherwise be. The Dual game Easyflash release by OnSlaught was used to playthrough the game for its highspeed loading, bugfixes and removal of copy protection. Defeating the protection looks like a simple reversal was done. Put in the wrong code to pass. Put in the correct code from the original passcode sheet and it will lock/crash the game!
