Player's Review

"Once again the Mekon poses a deadly threat to the Human Race. He has returned, cunning as ever, to take revenge on Dan Dare and the planet Earth.
This all action, arcade game allows you to play Colonel Dan Dare, hero of a thousand space flights, backed by a full Space Fleet army or ... play the sinister Mekon with his evil henchmen, the Treens! For the full story, see inside!"

The C64 version of the game closely resembled the Amstrad CPC game as the levels are completely different to the Spectrum game.

Just like the Spectrum game recorded previously. Each level has a tight time limit which doesn't allow for much exploration and plays overall too fast. You would be forgiven for thinking what the hell is going on when watching the playback. The controls can feel floaty and it is easy to get stuck on scenery especially if there is a shoot that can pull you in near by. And these shoots are not always good with the possibility of landing in a trash compactor!

The longplay shows playing through all four levels as Dan Dare and then again with Mekon. Think of dan Dare as Easy mode. The timer does not start until destroying the first Mekon chamber so you can explore and plan your route. You will be taking fire from your own and enemy forces so you need to keep an eye on energy although you do get plenty of lives. The timer is your biggest enemy. destroy all Mekon chambers and any force field generators that may block your path before heading to the airlock.

Mekon mode is Extremely Hard mode. The timer starts as soon as you enter the level as Dan has started the self destruct sequence. You need to save the Mekon by ejecting their chambers before moving to the air lock. Time is insanely tight with no room for error.

Overall, not the greatest game as much of the enjoyment is sucked away by the timer and rooms hidden by invisible gaps in walls. There's also no music which kind of kills the overall presentation on the C64.
