Player's Review

"ROAD RUNNER, An arcade smash hit that has finally trapped cartoon's most elusive character, Road Runner. Experience the speed and excitement of the classic encounters of our hero and the cunning, conniving Wile E. Coyote through many action packed levels."

One of those classic games that should have been more fun but ends up just as brutally difficult as the arcade. The game is fast and requires some very precise movements to navigate some of the stages as the coyote is fast and will get you if you stand around or simply get stuck on the terrain. As the game progresses, mines appear to further annoy (er.. challenge) you.

The objective is to get through each stage whist collect all the bird seed. Missing bird seed reduces your life bar with death being the result of missing too many. There are also numerous ways to die such as landing on a mine, being hit by a vehicle, jumping off a cliff as well as all the gadgets the coyote utilises. After losing a life, you respawn (if you have stored lives available) and continue where you left off. Sometimes lemonade bonuses appear. Collect em all for a score bonus at the end although it may cost a life collecting them.

There are 16 levels in total made up of four repeating levels. Each time a level is re visited it has been made progressively more difficult with multiplying mines.

Overall, the C64 does an ok job at recreating the arcade game but getting stuck on terrain (as if the c64 is running in character mode with sprites overlayed ) can be frustrating. Some times the mines are so close together it is near impossible to avoid hitting them although a well timed double jump can clear them. I think the game would be more fun as the coyote utilising various gadgets to catch the runner.
