"THIS IS ONE ANGRY VERSION!
Authentic Nintendo 64 effects and newer, fiercer levels pack stunning graphic detail into an already vicious version of Quake II. Featuring two-, three- and four-player deathmatch, fully customizable controls and save game features, this id-directed masterpiece takes gaming to an undefined level.

Eerie environments of light and shadow loom within newly designed, mission-based levels not found in the pc version. Incredible engine speed and fluidity intensify each level to a fast-paced, high-action gameplay experience. two-, three- and four-player deathmatch capabilities include new games: flag wars, frag teams and death tag. Rumble Pak support deepens every blow with powerful feedback. Fully customizable controls let you maneuver with speed and agility. Save game features put you back into the action instantly."

Quake 64 apparently didn't do so well sales wise so Quake II goes back to the Doom 64 formula of new levels and a slightly different look to separate it from the pc original also giving the Quake II fan a reason to play both. That said, some maps seem to be small portions of the original game as well as mission packs. The game does keep Quake 64s wacky controls which becomes the challenge to overcome more so than the game. And then there is the aiming. Enemies will often duck and hover above your reticule forcing some up/down adjustments and with the over sensitive controls its easy to overshoot and in an ambush, this can be very annoying. The laser dog (Parasite) I find is the most annoying enemy as they are small, agile and can absorb many shots.

The longplay goes through each level with the aim of getting 100% kills and secrets. Playing on Hard mode is a requirement for one of the secrets so its going to be a slow and steady play through. That said, the levels are all quite small, nothing like the original game and each level is played in a chain in stark contrast to the original where the levels all wrap around so you end up revisiting certain areas. With the levels being small there are not too many enemies to kill but those that are there tend to be quite high level to stop you run and gunning it. It's worth noting that not all the enemies of the original can be found here either. Completing the game actually rolls some credits! and you are awarded a challenge level for your time. The challenge takes place on a small death match level with very limited time. The enemies move around and it can require some luck to have them all line up nicely. the final two enemies take forever and there is no reward for conquering it. Just a troll suggesting you beat it with the blaster which I cant see being possible.

The N64 game does feel like a very cutdown game if you have played the original and even the PlayStation version managed to keep the experience intact with concessions make for the limited memory including only half the levels. The N64 game can be a bit of a chore with its choppy framerate when holding anything other then the blaster as well as oversensitive and just outright bad controls. The eerie music is present again and while it works ok in Quake 64, it seems a little out of place here.

At the end of the video I have lef tthe game to play all the demo files out. Normally I would start the video off with them but there are so many I thought best to leave until the end as extra content.
