Player's Review
"The peaceful inhabitants of Putty Moon are about to have their carefree existence shattered. There'll be no more oozing or dripping for the totally non-crunchy Putties if the evil wizard Dazzeldaae and his sidekick Dweezil the Cat have their way. Their sinister plan unfolds, almost too horrible to mention ...to export the peaceful putties to earth as 'Super Gum' the one that blows the biggest bubbles and shrieks when bursts! Guide local hero Billy Putty through the lands of Putty Moon, taking on Dazzeldaze's most evil and terrifying creations. With Billy's unique Putty skill of moulding and the assistance of the friendly Bots, he might just save his family family and friends from fate worse than death. You'll never look of Bubble Gum the same way again!"
Silly putty is the first version of the game included with the Commodore Amiga 600 Wild weird and Wicked pack. Not long after, the game was renamed to Putty due to a possible trademark infringement issue with a new title screen again packaged with the A600 pack which we can call version 2. The pack launch in October 1992 so the game would be early build put out in time for the pack to launch. Its was probably to late to pull out silly putty from the first batch. By the time the pack did launch, Putty would continue to evolve and a third version now exists which was the retail release around November 1992 with gameplay tweaks and changes covered in another longplay. The game was released again in 1994 on the GBH Budget label as Silly putty on the box but it still the same as the retail putty game as well final version released as Super Putty on the CD32 adapted for the cd32 controller.
Putty is a vertical platformer requiring you transport the bots from the top to the bottom of the level (or bottom to top). You can only carry one and they are vulnerable to enemy fire while you carry them. You have the ability to crush or absorb some enemies for points or in some cases take there form. You have limited energy and can replenish by absorbing food as well as enemies. There are many hidden collectables to aid you as well as score bonuses. From teeth which allow absorbing bigger enemies, Dustbin for transporting more than one bot (Although not working in this version), Super-Gum to allow you to inflate without losing energy a few times as well as extra time and invulnerability. Some levels also have an instant boost to the top or bottom collectable. An exit door powerup allows you to transport the bots through it instead of going to the big door. (Not working in this version). A couple of enemies need you to absorb other enemies like the bulb and the blob.
Silly Putty being the earliest game version has some issues but nothing game breaking. compared to the later version, the intro music is longer here. The first level is not optional. Some collectables don't work right. The babies last longer before exploding. some collectables are in different places or not implemented. No demo tutorial and we only have a single image for an ending. One interesting aspect to the game is that there is no death at at the bottom of levels even though they are sometimes open. As long as there are no spikes, you can freely fall to the bottom and it will return you to the nearest platform as well as refilling your energy! I think the scoring might not be operating right in this version as I score much less than I did in the later game even though I played pretty much the same way.
Overall, its an Amiga game of it's time which looks good and plays ok. The controls can be annoying sometimes when you have to do fire and direction combinations for some things like you want to stretch down but the game instead releases your bot. As pack-in game, it was good in game to get you started and overall the wild weird and wicked pack was great with Pushover and Formula One GP also included.
