"The naval base got a mutilated emergency signal from the Planet system APANOSIN The only spaceship in near of break their expedition to give the APANO SIN base immediately help. ...they are waiting for you... ...but there are no friends anymore..."

Apano Sin was a very late release for the Amiga and one of the last games to release in a box with manual for the Amiga 500 and arrived on six disks! It was released in English and German with the only difference being the text based intro. The game was finished in 1993 and was due for release by Neo but didn't happen causing the game to be shelved until V.A.K. Entertainment. released it in the year 2000, there one and only release. It is hard to imagine there being many Amiga owners left by this point looking for new A500 class games.

The game is well presented in a hires Overscanned screenmode with lots of enemies and bullets to fill the screen. The game is a rare one supporting 3 buttons on the joypad to save using the keys to set off the smart bomb (3), time freeze(1+3), swap ship(2) and firing(1) functions. The game starts off with a really long text based intro and a title screen that's just as long which I let play out in full. And then its five levels of blasting before the final outro plays. Disk Loading is quite quick as the game is streamed from disk whilst you play.

During play, it's the usual affair of blasting any thing that moves and you can fly to the top of the screen and then spin the ship on the way down to fire downwards. This mechanic only comes into play a few times and annoyingly the enemy waves are still coming at you from both directions. There are powerups to collect which can boost your weaponry and your ship changes to reflect the weapon in use which is a nice touch. You get a few smart bombs and can also slow down time for when the screen is a bit to hectic. There is a swap ship function but I never found it useful as it swaps between your fully powered mode and your basic weapon mode. There is a weird dual layer effect going on which whilst nice and moves smoothly, it is not used very well and appears as random objects to distract you.

What lets it down is the really annoying sound effects and less than interesting music that is over used. I do turn off the sfx during play once I've shown a little of them. The game is a bit buggy with some gfx corruption especially if played on anything other than a 1mb A500 and enemy waves can seemingly bug out and not appear and I had the music cut out a few times. There are no boss battles and the game just ends after four stages.

Overall, it is a well produced but far from bug free Shoot em up for the Amiga with plenty of interesting effects and mechanics that are not quite the norm for this game style. It is still a very short game though leaving you expecting a lot more from six disks. It's not bullet hell but playing on hard can certainly be a challenge.
