Player's Review
GEAR UP FOR TRUE ARCADE ACTION! A new phase in the legendary rivalry of the World Warriors has begun. Newcomers Cammy, Dee Jay, Hawk and Fei Long have joined the ranks of the Street Fighters in the hopes of becoming the ultimate martial arts champion. But there is another.....
An ancient foe named Akuma has surfaced to crush the battlehardened Street Fighters. His power knows few limitations and he has the ability to retire the World Warriors permanently.
There is hope for the heroes, however as they have prepared for Akuma's arrival by learning new moves and techniques to combat this deadly new enemy. These new abilities add enough firepower to the mighty cast of characters to make even Akuma realize that he too is in for the fight of his life!
This incredible arcade classic challenges your fighting skills with all new offensive and defensive capabilities for every player! Do you have what it takes to battle your way through a world of opposition? The only way you'll ever know is to dare to play! Learn updated moves and powers for your favorite Street Fighter! Speed Option: You can now play at three distinct speed settings! Charge up your Super Meter and let loose with the new Super Combo maneuvers! Discover the secret pattern to usher in the monstrous Akuma! Compatible with 6-Button PC controllers. One or two player simultaneous play."
This is a tragic conversion that should not have been released as it clearly wasn't finished (IMHO) and may well have contributed to Gametek going bankrupt. Who would have green lit publishing this conversion on 11 disks that must be HD installed to play. The game is being played on an 68040/25 to try and speed it up, but it doesnt make much difference. The game is massively stripped down compared to the PC version it is based on. The game looks nice enough in screenshots but it all falls apart once we get to the gameplay. Poor character animations, terrible input lag, garbled gfx on projectiles and super moves, no music and minimal sound effects not used even though they are on the disk. The CD32 also got a conversion but at least that had the music to feel more like a complete game but plays just as badly. At least we can choose a different character costume based on which of the six buttons are pressed to select a character.
The longplay shows two plays although one was more then enough. The intent was to try to unlock Akuma by completing all rounds without losing a match. Didn't work out. The second play was to try and unlock by getting below 500,000 score (avoiding super moves) with at least three perfect wins before getting to bison (I read somewhere) but that didn't work either. I close the video losing a fight to show the continue screen which is where all the speech samples are of all places. I tried the PC version cheat to unlock akuma (3 seconds on ryu, guile, hawk, cammy and ryu and pressing all three punch buttons) but that didn't work either. It was too much effort to try and get super high score by all perfect wins. Also, you only get to enter your name on the high score table if you lose! Beat the game and your efforts are not recognised. Continue and the score is reset to zero. There is no credit roll although a few Amiga specific credits were added if you wait on the title screen. The character ending are massively reduced and just don't hit like they should.
Overall, this is a bad release that didn't even have an original Amiga box or manual re-using the all the PC materials with nothing Amiga related to read there. A CD32 pad is required to access all moves but many of them I just could not pull off following the PC instructions in the Amiga manual. Also note the the resolution keeps changing depending on the level. The game supports ntsc but the larger screens get cut off at the bottom. I tried the WHDLoad version hoping it would make the game work better but it has it's own problems with a major bug causing a protection fault when a super move is performed by the player or cpu.
