Player's Review

Ihatovo Monogatari (The Stories of Ihatovo) is not one of your everyday games where you beat up baddies, level up, or solve intricate puzzles. If anything it's a glorified interactive novel where the only real challenge is talking to people to trigger new events and cutscenes, but that's the whole point - and charm - of the game. If you like Studio Ghibli, you'll feel right at home.

You play as some teacher who comes to the city of Ihatovo, and someone by the name of Kenji Miyazawa piques his interest. You'll spend most of your time talking to the locals and helping them out while searching Miyazawa's lost journals.

The whole game is based on the works of Kenji Miyazawa, a poet, author, and activist who lived around the turn of the 20th Century who not only wrote works like Gauche the Cellist, The Life of Gusko Budli, and - most famously - The Night on the Galactic Railroad (among other works), but attempted to help out farmers with new ways to produce crops. The most important characters you see are based on his stories.

The music is very famous in Japan, composed by Tsukasa Tawada, who also did work for Whomp 'Em, Pokemon Coliseum, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. The music in Ihatovo Monogatari is very atmospheric and beautiful like the choreography of a movie.

I had to do a little backtracking trying to talk to people (some of them repeatedly) to trigger a new scene, but I try to keep it straightforward.
