Player's Review
Originally released in 2016, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero follows up after The Pirate's Curse. One night, a mysterious voice wakes up Shantae and leads her to this hidden spring under Mimic's shop. The voice then reveals themself as a messenger from the Genie Realm. They warn Shantae that an evil doer seeks to strike the Genie Realm and that only she has the power to save them and her world as well. The next day, Shantae sets off across Sequin Land in hopes of finding components to help Mimic build a machine that should help protect Scuttle Town, helping others along the way and stopping other villains with nefarious purposes.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero - Ultimate Edition contains all the DLC and bonus modes that WayForward has added to the game since it's original release. Including 2 alternate gameplay modes, 4 alternate costume modes with their own gameplay style, as well as a Hard Core mode and New Game + for good measure...and I go through them all (except New Game + or Hero Mode which is just the main story with all of your animal transformations unlocked. Nothing new added). I complete the main game first, collecting everything scattered around Sequin Land. I didn't obtain 100% because that requires buying out the shop (as usual), but all field collectables and upgrades are shown. For the other modes, Pirate Queen's Quest, Friends to the End, Ninja, Beach, Officer, and Jammies Mode, I do get 100% for each of those. And finally, I end the playthrough with a run through Hard Core mode. Despite it's name, it's not really all that bad. Some enemy patterns are more aggressive and you take more damage, making the opening stages more tense, but once you get some heart containers and the armor, it's not too bad, just tense. Practice with caution and you should be fine.
