Player's Review
"AFTER BURNER lets you experience the sensations of a fighter pilot.
The cockpit is a true masterpiece of high technology. It moves on two completely different axes, giving it four-way movement. As soon as you take the controls to take off from the aircraft carrier, you're launched at Mach 2 into a series of dogfights. 24 different stages! You're attacked from the front or the rear; you have to navigate through the middle of anti-aircraft fire and enemy missiles."
Upgrade to the Arcade Original After Burner released in earlier in 1987. This is the Deluxe motion version played on default (normal) settings. The gameplay is fast and frantic with enemy missiles constantly homing in on you. The levels are quite short at this difficulty but still, you should not waste the missiles and wait for the lock on before firing. Ideally if going for score you set the engines to slow for maximum level time and enemies to destroy but it leaves you open to attack. Barrel rolling is useful for quick dodges can easily catch you out by restricting your movement until it competes. As you progress through the 24 levels you will get a quick break every two or three levels refilling your ammo as well as two bonus levels where you dont have to worry about being shot at.
The longplay is a run through all levels whilst showing the hidden messages that can be accessed at each of the interlude sections. levels 16,19 and 21 cant be shown as they require a button press that is not emulated by Mame currently (Foot sensor switch for stopping the mechanical motion). After completion, four hidden texts are shown after using a continue. The Attract mode is moved to the end of the video as it goes on a while with four variants.
Overall a great Arcade game and a huge achievement for 1987 and while its the original it is no longer the best way to play with the Saturn or 3DS versions being the ones to play.
