Plot: 'In 1995, the V.S.S.E., an global intelligence agency, helps Sercian opposition leader William MacPherson engineer a coup that overthrows a century-old authoritarian regime. MacPherson successfully wins the election as the Sercian republic's first democratically elected president. Sherudo Garo, the last survivor of the previous regime's family, schemes to restore the old order, ordering a series of attacks and assassinations that destabilize the nation. As one of the last phases of his plan, Garo orders President MacPherson's daughter Rachel abducted and imprisoned in Mr Garo's family's castle on a isolated island, demanding vital military secrets in exchange for her life. A desperate MacPherson contacts the V.S.S.E., who in turn dispatches veteran agent Richard Miller, the "One Man Army", to infiltrate the castle and rescue Rachel.'
Compared to the PSX port, where graphics and HUD were toned down due to the obvious hardware limitations it had, this original version for Namco System Super 22 arcade machines was praised for its innovative mechanics, not only in terms of graphics, but also in gameplay, where the lightgun addon is used to take down all soldiers. This feature was carried over to the PSX port, adding native support for the Guncon peripheral. As for the longplay, it goes through the entire story mode while ensuring 100% hit accuracy. There is a time attack mode where you replay any of the stages from story mode (without worrying about life count) with the objective of beating the PCB record.
