Player's Review
"SIT DOWN, STRAP IN AND HANG ON FOR A TIRE SQUEALING, FENDER CRUNCHING STUNT RACING DUEL TO THE DEATH!
Fly around mind-bending hairpin turns, scale unbelievable giant loops, crank through neck-wrenching corkscrews, launch off hard-core jumps and feel the G-force as you run your rivals off the road.
Whiplash's ultra-sophisticated computer Al makes for intense solo play but the competition really heats up when up to 16 live players (via network or modem) vie for the flag. What's more, a built-in communications system brings team play to life as partners plot strategy right in the heat of battle.
On these tracks, the action comes hard, fast, and from all angles. Put those boring ovals back on the shelf and entrust your real racing passions to Whiplash-it'll knock you for a loop.
- Brace yourself for 16 multi-surface tracks (including 8 secret tracks) loaded with one-of-a-kind, death-defying stunts like giant loops. multiple corkscrews, cross-traffic jumps, blind drawbridges and more.
- Choose from 8 blazing prototype racing cars, each dialed-in-with unique performance settings. Select a car with amazing cornering abilities or a vehicle with mind-numbing acceleration.
- Battle up to 15 players in real-time, full-contact, no-mercy racing action with the world's only 16-player racing game.
- Test your skills against some of the most intelligent, and merciless. computer Al found in any arcade racing computer game.
- Thrill to the unmatched action of a true 3D racing world complete with an eye-popping range of virtual camera angles."
The game is being played in 3DFX mode. The game developed to run on a 486 class pc but good luck having a fun playable game there as the game is quite demanding especially if you want the higher res svga mode. The game was bundled with 3dfx Voodoo cards (as well as others) making it one of the earliest commercial 3dfx games although the cd tracks may be missing on the bundled versions as the space is used for other parts of the game bundle. Audio from the original release is used here. The 3dfx game looks a bit better with softer textures and plays smoother but it is missing all the hud elements and looks overall bland in comparison.
The most notable difference from Fatal Racing apart from the name is the announcer voiced by Larry Huffman. The game it self is identical. The updated 3dfx versions of both feature modem and network play. The bundle versions (not played here) of both game also feature different player names and renamed girly (easy) difficulty.
Whiplash has racing across sixteen tracks across two championships. In each you can race against up to sixteen racers each in a team of two that will be looking to out race you or destroy you. The tracks are quite short but the race length will depend on the difficulty level chosen. Damage is set to user preference and is set high here for a chance to smash the opposition. Of course they will be trying to smash the player as well as each other and will even drive the track in reverse to get a head on collision. You get three lives but the game can also throw you back a lap so being taken out is costly. It's not all bad though as the finishing order isn't the same very race so you don't need to be first each race to win overall. Races can also be completed if all the opponents have been destroyed.
The longplay firstly goes through the Gremlin Cup at Medium(Default) Difficulty, High Damage and consists of eight tracks. Completing and winning it unlocks the Premier Cup which is a further eight tracks again on medium difficulty to keep it short. Noting is unlocked as you need to beat at least one cup on invincible to unlock the advanced cars. Watch the Fatal Racing longplay to see full length impossible difficulty run. Once both are completed I enter a cheat for some hidden bonus tracks. I'm not going through them all and just show a few laps with the Mr evil cars. I make use of the Formula1 car and can show the ice weapon although its it's useless against Mr Evil cars. Secret car weapons get disabled if Death mode cheat is used.
Unlockables:-
Premier Cup - Win the Gremlin Cup Championship
Advanced Cars - Win any Championship Cup at Impossible difficulty
Bonus Cup - ??? Unknown, maybe kill count related or only accessible with the cheat code.
Overall, the game stood out in 1995 and plays like it. It introduced another dynamic to the racing formula by allowing you to destroy the opposition and each driver team having there own car physics and strategy. They can be quite aggressive towards you if they see your car is weakened. Similar games released at the time include Sega rally and screamer and for me, those achieve a better arcade racing game experience. Playing Whiplash today though, there is too much wrong with it that takes away from the enjoyment like wacky car and track physics that can have you bouncing off the walls, flying off the track and jumps that can leave you upside down. Then there is the chase camera that has the car right in the middle of the screen which is a major change from there 2d racing games. As a bundled game to show off your new 3d card, it's a good starting point for what is to come and makes a weaker pc suddenly able to play the higher resolution fast moving games.
