Player's Review
"ALL the FA CUP, LEAGUE and SUPERLEAGUE features! Plan TRAINING, TEAMTALKS, MARKET TRANSFER and cunning STRATEGIES! Realistic THROW-INS, HAT TRICKS, PENALTIES, INJURYS, OFF-SIDE and more!...IT'S INCREDIBLE... YOU ARE THE BOSS!"
Based on the Amiga game but with the addition of backgrounds to make it look a bit more pretty as well as added sounds and music. Maybe less buggy as well as parts of the game are definitely operating differently, especially the training. The game didn't crash at the end which is something.
The game is terrible, awful even. The instructions tell you absolutely nothing about the game and how to operate it so you are left to figure it out as you go. Between each game you should check which players are doing well and those that are not can be moved around. You can choose to train them for a different position or sell them and buy some new players. It's quite annoying that you cant see stats and position on the training screen so can take memorisation of names and positions. I don't do much buying and selling and instead train hard. But not too hard for the players that have to play else they will lose energy needed to play and then you'll need to have them on fitness training to bring them back. I don't know if this is the right strategy or not. Maybe you are supposed to try and train them in each position or just sell and buy players with better stats.
When choosing tactics before a match you can decide how aggressively your team plays. telling them to tackle hard and floor the other players will most likely get you a good result but also leave your players injured. I don't quite understand the Hatchet Man option. Before a match you can use it to have one of your players attack the opposition. Sometimes this results in an opposing player getting injured but I did not encounter any negative effects of using it except maybe the opposing team plays more aggressive after the action is taken.
I have previously played on the C64 and Amiga and did quite well as Liverpool. Now I don't know if the team choice makes a huge difference but playing as Aston Villa in the Dos game, no matter what commands I give, the players are all pacifists not interested in scoring and happy to walk away with a draw. If I tell them to play aggressively, they will throw the game. It makes climbing the league that much harder. Some training management is also needed as players lose energy. I figured I need to have them doing no playing or training to keep there energy up.
Overall, this is probably the best version of the game but that by no means makes it good. The whole game feels like a chore to play just flipping through menus. Sure I could have done more with buying and selling but I was trying to train a team and make them the best there ever was. More could have been done with the training by making players good in all positions but the 16bit versions make it difficult to see player stats and position when setting up there training, it was better on the 8bit machines in this regard. Ultimately I do with both the FA and League Cups and end the longplay after the 1st season.
