Player's Review

Developed by Infogrames and released in 1995. It is based on H. P. Lovecraft's books and a sequel to Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet. It's not necessary to play the first game to follow the story. There's not much reference to the first game.

Technical side is good. Decent graphics and especially the music has a nice ambient thing going on to set up atmos for a horror game. Funny or not so funny thing is that the game is not scary at all. The monster is shown right at the beginning of the game and it's not very frightening. It does make few more appearances throughout the game, but always in bright light. Besides the monster, there's nothing else to induce fright. Cheesy or just plain bad voice actors don't help either. So the game fails horribly with the horror theme and besides that it's a traditional point & click adventure. Puzzles are mostly item puzzles and most of the dialogue with characters is straightforward, quick to the point. This makes the characters not particularly memorable and after finishing the game I still get confused about who's who. PoI is worth checking out for adventure game enthusiasts, but there's definitely better stuff out there.
