Player's Review

The Daedalus Encounter is a FMV / scifi / puzzle / adventure game released for Win 3.x, Mac and 3DO in 1995. Very linear game with few short alternative videos depending on different actions.

There are three difficulty levels. Difficulty determines the number of puzzles. Some puzzles are solved only once, but other ones have 1, 3 or 6 variations of the same type depending on difficulty. This was played on average with three puzzle variations. Puzzles are basically simple, but solving can get tricky. Most require fiddling with color combinations so can't recommend this game for the color blind. Puzzle quality is IMO OK if you enjoy these and more interesting than item puzzles not based on any logic. One of the puzzles is actually a mini-game, an advanced form of connect-the-dots with AI opponent.

Interface is very unintuitive until you get what the devs were going after, but after figuring it out it's still pretty bad. There are two interchangeable video modes. A small window within the HUD and zoomed full screen. I played most of the game in full screen and used keyboard shortcuts for actions (A = analyze, F = flashlight etc.). For an FMV game The Daedalus Encounter isn't terrible, but suffers from same problems as most in the genre. There's not much attempt at integrating video clips with the actual game and besides the puzzles gameplay feels minimal. Production values are nice for the time. Actor performance and dialogue is bad, but good for laughs.

There's also a "bad" ending and achieving that is more difficult than the "good" ending, because there's an extra puzzle to solve. The "bad" ending and some death scenes were compiled at the end after credits, but didn't bother recording every death video.

01:38:36 Good ending
01:41:02 Credits (song is slightly glitched, not sure why, not volume related)
01:43:15 Bad ending
01:48:00 Death scenes
