Player's Review

"Take a seat, grasp the controls, and enter the world of the S.T.U.N. (Spread Tunnel Underground Network) Runner. Players travel ahead in time to the 21st century and experience the thrill of racing in a futuristic form of competitive driving. At the control of state-of-the-art technology, players pilot a billion-dollar vehicle capable of attaining speeds of over 900 miles per hour!"

The original arcade game is notoriously difficult and its many home conversions seemingly more so. Interestingly the game opens on very easy but I am playing on Medium as laid out in the recommended settings of the game manual. The difficulty comes not so much from the obstacles in the high speed tunnels but from a often insanely tight time limit that doesn't allow for many if any mistakes.

There is also added difficulty from the emulation with crazy sensitive analogue controls and the game running at a framerate which can be hard on the eyes and a timer which may be running to fast as level 20 was ridiculous taking many attempts to get through ... but enough complaining as it's done!

Even with the difficult, I've always liked the game as well as many other tunnel shooters. The idea of the game is simple as you race through the tunnels while trying to maintain maximum speed by riding the walls like Bobsleigh. To annoy you, other vehicles can appear which are indestructible and get in your way knocking of parts of your shields if they hit you. Then there are the cars traveling the wrong way into you and other smaller vehicles that can be shot at. Later in the game you get overhead enemies that are shooting at you and need destroying quick with the turret that can be aimed up/down.

Along the way you can collect stars which can award extra shield or shockwave which can take out a string of enemies in front of you. Some tracks have boost pads which boost your speed as well as making you indestructible. At the start of level 9 there is a level warp which takes you to level 16 and awards 20.000 for taking it (not in this video).

Overall a great game though and one I've played on many of the home platforms of the time. The spectrum version in particular being quite psychedelic with the way it draws the tunnels. and the Atari lynx version is a great conversion.
