Player's Review

"DRIVE THE DREAM. YOU drive 8 of the world's most exotic vehicles - race the clock, race the computer or race a friend in SPLIT-SCREEN mode."

This longplay mirrors the previous PlayStation longplay of the game and most of the description is lifted from that playthrough with changed where appropriate. The video was recorded to match up the tournament and make the two videos easier to compare against.

I play through the Tournament mode which consist of six tracks, unlocking a seven'th on completion of those six. This mode can be overly challenging. The AI cars blatantly cheat by going faster then the car is capable of, blasting round corners without breaking and no negative effect of scraping on the road sides. Sometimes is not always clear where the road side is as sometimes just hitting some gravel is enough to cause a collision and other times it will let you go over the grass. Autumn Valley tin particular is challenging as there are some dips in the road that cause you to lose speed while the ai cars just go over it without consequence. You need to place 1st on every track to complete the tournament.

After completing the tournament (6 initial tracks), Rally mode is unlocked which covers all roads in dirt. You need to press L + R to select it and it doesn't do anything to tell you this. In single race or head to head mode you can now go round each track with rally car handing causing you to slide around a lot more. I went through tournament mode again, showing different cars where I can and on completing this, the warrior car is unlocked for single race/head to head mode. Of course it doesn't tell you that you have unlocked it. It is only selectable in single and head to head race modes. Oasis Springs and Lunar Springs is not present in the Saturn game.

After tournament mode is completed, its time to have some fun finally. I show off both the unlocked lunar and oasis tracks in a head to head race and then I show off a Head to head in the warrior car on the city track. Now the game is populated with traffic making it more fun and the ai cars can crash as well. You can even get into a police chase of sorts. If I was to just casually play this game it would be in this mode and seems to be where the most fun is to be had. Once I'm done I show the games credits video. The last half hour of this video is just going through the Showroom information for all the cars. It takes a while.

The cockpit view works well and helps with immersion and with the cops and the traffic it feels like this game could have been part of the test drive series. Its worth noting that traffic is only used in single or head to head modes and not in Rally mode. Notable differences to the PlayStation game are the lack of lighting effects going through tunnels and also no reverb effects in the tunnels. The FMV is also of lower quality and the framerate has taken a hit most notable again in the tunnels. The demo videos that play on the title screen use FMV in the PlayStation game and in game gfx here on the Saturn game which takes longer to load.
