Player's Review
"Race against the clock as fast as your mean wheels will carry you, Don't take a tumble over each set of dangerous and challenging obstacles. Dozens of courses await with Ramps, Barrels, Walls, Hydrants, Girders, and creatures. Beat your opponent in your race to victory, Bonus points, and the winners cup. But remember! Don't get too muddy and don't forget to get home in time for dinner."
The game appears to be an enhanced version of All terrain vehicle simulator from the 8Bit home computers previously released by Codemasters with a bit of Kickstart from Mastertronic thrown in. The box lists '47 top levels' but these are split into five groups of six levels but you only get to play three levels in each group and each group has a bonus level thrown in at the end. Then there is the 2 player mode with it's own set of 16 levels. Many of the levels look and feel similar so you are not missing out by not having to play all levels in a single run. Once you know the easiest ones, id stick to those anyway.
You start the game with two lives but can earn extra for reaching score milestones. Lives are lost if the time runs out forcing you to restart the stage. You can fall of the bike as much as you like but it costs a little time getting going again. Your objective is to get over all the obstacles in your path by jumping and moving at the correct speed to clear the gaps. When riding over fences and poles you must watch your speed. Some surfaces can not be jumped on and you can not collide with animals or the kids that happen to put themselves in harms way. You also get a limited number of boosts which certainly helps if you havent got the needed speed. Once you have cleared area five, then you win the game!
As you cant show all levels in a single run, I have shown two full runs and added the remaining five levels onto the end as well as the game over screen. Player two is controlled by the cpu and is just there to have something happening on the second screen with no impact on you should player two win. You just have to cross the line within the time limit.
Overall, its a good version of ATV Simulator which plays well and is fairly forgiving. In ATV you can bounce of the animals but it wont let you do that here. Only real negative about it is that all the areas are the same or similar with not much variation which gets repetitive after a while. A little weather theming like the level intros would have helped.
