Player's Review
"You’re about to find out what’s involved for a young bee with a day-job. Gigantic spiders, sneaky ants and loathsome slugs are just a few of the meanies who’ll get in your way when you’re bee number 52. You’re hardly defenceless though, and with enough speed, skill and firepower, you may get through the day – despite being heavily outnumbered. Let your nose, or rather proboscis, lead the way to the flowers and don’t let anyone – or anything get in your way. B52 – You’re cleared for take off!!"
Bee 52 has you controlling Bee number 52 in an effort to pollinate the flowers and bring home the nectar to produce a jar of honey. There are twenty four levels split into twelve Front and Back areas. It difficult to say which is the easy and hard route as they balance out. Taking the back route your bee hovers but bugs will fire at you. Taking the front route you need to keep the bee in flight but the bugs wont likely shoot at you. You do need to to do both routes anyway to complete the game.
In each level there are bugs that will hinder your progress. You can shoot them but the bigger ones may need to be stung. The hanging spiders can get you caught in there webbing and Venus fly traps can drag you down to your death. in both cases keep trying to sting them to get past them. As you progress through the levels there will be a greater number of plants to visit and bugs to deal with. The and and bubble flies need to be dealt with as they will steal the honey from the hive if you let them get there. If you do lose honey, some of the plants will open up again to re visit.
Quite often a super fly will come across which you can kill for a weapon upgrade. An additional junior bee for extra firepower, an enhanced stinger, even more firepower, extra lives and bombs which come in handy to clear the screen momentarily. Enemies will come back to life after a very short time. Some holes can be visited for a chance of finding goodies.
Overall, this is a well done game that plays well and looks nice enough doing it in the typical Codemasters style. Collision detection is fair often favouring you. If junior is with you, you will gain a hit point. Hitting walls will usually bounce you away stunning you for a moment. Manage your speed so as not to accidently bounce into enemies. Some of the front back levels are mirrored but there are unique levels too.
