Player's Review

It not often you come across a homebrew game that comes with the polish and care of a commercial game and this one really stands out. Designed to resemble the popular guitar Hero rhythm game, this game makes a seriously good effort and could easily have been a commercial release back in the day.

The game is freely downloadable at the following link:-

Due to the relatively weak sound processor used in the nes compared with other 8 bit machines , every nes tune tends to sound pretty similar and it is very challenging to get a good melody out of it. Its safe to say the music in this game has had a lot of care and attention to make sure the music covered in the game is a fantastic rendition of the original.

The game contains six songs and each one contains 8 challenges. You need to beat a certain amount of challenges in order to unlock a d+pad part for that song and also credits to unlock other songs. The way the challenges are constructed , it takes a minimum of 2 plays of each song to complete all 8. Once all d+pad parts are obtained you get the ultimate challenge which contains parts of all 6 songs so the button sequences will all be familiar after finishing the six songs.

Up to this point I have just been trying to meet the challenges and avoid using the powerups. During the final challenge I show the effects of the powerups as there is no challenge to meet and so I can show their effects during this song. After the Ultimate challenge is complete, I go back through all songs to complete the remaining challenges and complete the game. This homebrew has commercial quality written all over it and stands high above other homebrew games on the system.
