Player's Review

Pooyan is an arcade game released by Konami in Japan in 1982. It was manufactured in North America by Stern Electronics. Pooyan was ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 8-bit family, Color Computer 2, Commodore 64, Sord M5, MSX, Apple II, Tandy TRS-80, Tomy Tutor and the Famicom. The Famicom port was also released for the Wii's Virtual Console only in Japan. Pooyan was also included on a compilation disc, Konami Arcade Classics, for the PlayStation. An emulated version of the game was released in 2006 for PlayStation 2 in Japan as part of the Oretachi Geasen Zoku Sono-series.

The player controls "Mama", a pig whose babies have been kidnapped by a group of wolves. Mama Pig defends her home and rescues her "Pooyan" (the kidnapped piglets) riding an elevator car moved by two "Buuyan" (controlled by the player), and uses a bow and arrow with slabs of meat against the balloon-riding wolves and their boss.

There are two types of stages. In the first, the wolves are riding to the bottom of the screen, and if Mama does not shoot them down, they will climb up the ladders and try to bite her. In the second, the wolves are riding to the top of screen, and if enough wolves get there, they will push a boulder on top of Mama, resulting in a life being lost. In both cases, the stage is cleared by shooting all the wolves, though in the second stage the boss must be shot down (which will take many shots unless the meat is used), otherwise the wolves will keep coming.

After the second stage is cleared, one of the two types of bonus rounds begins. In one type, Mama must shoot all the wolves only using meat, while in the other she must use regular arrows on the fruits. Afterward, the game begins anew every time with ever faster wolves using ever tougher balloons.

There are many secret items that can be revealed by performing very specific actions during the main stages. I tried to show all that I know of at least once. The leaf appears when you move the lift up and down repeatedly, it makes your arrows faster. The mushroom appears when you shoot 12 arrows at a certain pixel in the wall, it makes your lift faster. The caterpillar appears when you shoot any 30 targets in a row without missing, it gives you unlimited meat. The butterfly appears when you make 3 rocks bounce off your lift and then shoot them, it reduces the upgrade rate for falling fruits by one (from 8 shot without missing to 7, and so on) . The bird appears when you match your shots with the bass line of the BGM, it changes the trajectory of meat from parabolic to zig-zag. The cockroach appears in the cave-type stage when you pop 20 balloons from the leftmost pipe in a row without popping balloons from other pipes, it gives you 5 extra lives.

After showing all stages, secret items and falling bonus items, I start losing to show various ways to die, and eventually I get a game over.
