Player's Review
"Join Pond and his pals for some fun and games before their next daring mission! Help them shape up in such crazy events as the 100 Metre Splash, the Tour de Grass and Leap Frog. From Kipper watching to Shell Shooting, James Pond unveils some crazy sports that are guaranteed to separate the men from the minnows! Featuring the infamous James Pond. Eight silly sports events - plus special bonus events. Four player option - participation and spectator sports."
After Robocod and before James Pond 3, The Aquatic Games was released as an Olympic events based sports game, The original Amiga games was known as "The Aquatic Games: Starring James Pond And The Aquabats" and released by Millennium Interactive in 1992. Why the the SNES version got renamed, I do not know.
When the game starts you can choose up to four players to participate or go to training. There are eight events to play through and you goal is simply to have the highest score at the end of all of them and take top spot on the podium. Controls are simple enough with just a jump and two action buttons which need to be pressed quickly to build speed in running events. Whilst simple it can still be a chore making things happen as well as hitting pixel perfect jumps for high scores.
The longplay shows all events with the intend to achieve gold times as well as collect all the bonus letters. Two events I didn't gold as I couldn't get all the moves done as well as getting the letter in the tight time limit although It could probably be done. The second I don't think can be done as by the time the needed jump slime comes out to reach the letter, the time limit is up. Collecting all letters leads to one final bonus event as well as leading to the final bonus run and jump for the last shield. Nothing happens for the effort but you might just have a winning score!
Overall a well presented and good looking game on the snes. It a bit short but still very challenging as most of these types of sports games are. Probably doesnt have much last ability and I don't think I would have wanted to pay for this on a £50 snes cart back in the day.
