Player's Review

"Sega delivers the most gruelling driving experience to ever hit the PC! Skill and technique are essential as one or two players navigate their way around four courses of the most arduous terrain ever! Buckle-up for the ride of your life!"

Developed to run on a minimum of a Pentium 75 (yeah, good luck with that) but will take advantage of mmx instructions if your cpu supports it giving the framerate a notable boost and making the svga 640x480x16 mode playable. I have made two videos. The first is the official retail game, and the second is based on a an unofficial Direct 3D patch itself based on a rare pack in version of the game with a Orchid Righteous 3D voodoo card.

Sega Rally has you racing across four tracks (just three if you don't finish in first) within a strict time limit. On each track you need to push past as many opposition drivers as you can to make the next round a little easier. Your primary goal is to finish first in the fastest time possible for the high score table. You can choose from two cars with a third unlocked if you finish first on at least Normal Difficulty. This also unlocks the Lakeside track for use in Practice. Nothing is unlocked for beating Hard mode, not even an extra credit roll.

Sega Rally is a notoriously difficult game due to it's intent to reflect real rally driving which has you sliding about on the mud struggling for grip as well as being again an opposition that has a perfect drive. The controls play a big part in this which can feel over or under responsive depending on the car and especially with the Stratos, all to easy to spin the car costing valuable time. The PC game has additional issues due to it's framerate and very dependant on the strength of the pc it is running on. However, I still found it a little easier overall than the Sega Saturn Game. Time wasn't much of a concern whilst recording this pc game.

The longplay shown playing through Arcade mode multiple times to show a run with each of the three cars. The final Stratos run is played on Hard as well as showing an additional audio track on dessert track. The second video is more of a bonus using the unofficial Direct3D patch (with dosbox voodoo emulation) which is overall darker, especially when messing with the time of day effects on the Stratos stage.

Overall, it's Sega Rally and plays as you would expect. Higher resolution than the Sega Saturn version, maybe even faster but I'm not sure I would prefer this over the Saturn game. The Direct3D version however does play better thx to the extra framerate and smoothness. The Arcade version being the one to play if you have access to it.

Note: Played with Dosbox at 3000000 cycles. Whilst initially looks ok, could have done with more at lakeside track. Pentium_mmx would help massively but an emu bug was stopping the game from loading the race, although the opening demos look fine.
