Player's Review

"Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix is an action-adventure game developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive for the PlayStation. It is the prequel to Fear Effect." Released in 2001 on PlayStation and PC.

"Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix begins in Hong Kong in the year 2048. The player delves into the colorful histories of the original cast of three mercenaries - and newcomer Rain Qin - as well as the extraordinary circumstances that brought them together. In the wake of a degenerative global pandemic called EINDS (Environmentally Induced Nucleotides Degeneration Syndrome ? pronounced "ends"Wink, theft, murder, and terrorism have become big business.

Hana Tsu-Vachel and Rain Qin are freelance operatives, Royce Glas is a washed-up former soldier, and Jacob "Deke" Decourt is a cutthroat assassin. Much of the game's intrigue lies in how these unlikely allies even manage to come together for one cause. From the start, each of them have their own motives, but they soon all become entangled in a sinister plot extending far beyond politics, espionage, or personal survival. The adventure takes players through a futuristic Hong Kong, the formidable walled city of Xi'an, the lost tomb of the first emperor of China, and, finally, into the mountain island of the immortals, Penglai Shan."

The Overall quality of the game is an upgrade over the previous game with larger image size and more detailed graphics. However there is still sevear macroblocking in the Playstation version that can distract from the overall quality of the game.

I have played on Hard mode even though there is no incentive to do so in this game. I try to conserve ammo where possible although I never felt like ammo was scarce like it was in the previous game. The game is a little odd as it is split into to halves. The first is more of an action game and the second is all puzzles centred around Chinese mythology.

At the end of the game you get to make a choice on who to shoot which effects the final boss battle and ending. I complete the game with the good ending and after the credit roll I add the other option and bad ending. I could have handled the final boss battles better by switching to the correct weapon but it is what it is ..

After the game is completed you are awarded with a code to unlock extra art on each disc. To get codes for all 4 discs you need to complete the game 4 times. Thank the lord for cheat sites. In a bonus video I show the artwork from all 4 discs. You will see the screen flash in the 4 colours of each dna strand type.
