Player's Review

"Riven is a puzzle adventure video game and the sequel to Myst. Developed by Cyan Worlds, it was initially published by Red Orb Entertainment, a division of Br?derbund. Riven was distributed on five compact discs and released on October 31, 1997, in North America; it was later released on a single DVD-ROM, with improved audio and a fourteen-minute "making-of" video. In addition to the PC versions, Riven has been ported to several other platforms, including the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and iOS-based devices.
The story of Riven is set immediately after the events of Myst. Having been rescued from the efforts of his sons, the main non-player protagonist Atrus enlists the help of the player character to free his wife from his power-hungry father, Gehn. Unlike Myst, which took place on several worlds known as Ages linked together by special books, Riven takes place almost entirely on the Age of Riven, a world slowly falling apart due to Gehn's destructive rule."

The Playstation version is also on 5 discs and you switch between them as you move between the different islands. The resolution is higher than the previous Myst game on Playstation and also moves much faster. It is a shame it doesn't use the full 640x480 resolution though. Myst was quite a bad port for Playstation.

In this longplay, I do try to show all the clues in the game as I move between locations setting up the final puzzle. The first 3 hours of the game is pretty much discovering the 5 dome symbols that link each island and 5 animals by the sounds they make and there symbols. I have also shown the journals as I get them. You may want to pause the video to read individual pages as I move quickly through them. These journals also contain numbers/codes that need to be deciphered. In the school I show the machine which tells you what number goes with which symbol. I don't show them all as it would take a long while but there is a pattern that can be followed.

The structure of the game doesn't make it easy to timestamp specific parts so I will list the times I jump between islands to solve specific puzzles. This usually results in a disc swap.
