Player's Review

PlayStation version of Test Drive Off-Road 2 (Known as Test Drive 4X4 in Europe) released by Accolade in 1998. The game is entirely different to the previous game so It looks like they were taking an entirely different approach this time round.

No longer do you race in laps around small tracks but instead you race along long point to point tracks. There are only 6 tracks and there reverse variants. Playing through 5 class championships with up to 6 races and a final all class championship with 10 races, these tracks start to feel old fast. There are no shortcuts this time round, just ideal paths to take around obstacles.

The ai drivers can be brutal especially on the reverse tracks. If the front racer is allowed to get to far ahead, you wont see them again and they will win by 20-30 seconds. This has to be a game bug as there stats are boosted far to high even when I finally get most expensive vehicle. When I take on the Hummer championship (round 3), I make the mistake of going with cheapest hummer which makes the races super hard and I have to try and block the other racers all the time. What I should have done is sell all my cars and buy the level 2 or 3 Hummer to make it easier on myself. Also note that Military vehicles also come with a radar that lets you see how close the other racers are.

The game looks better than the previous game yet is still quite basic overall compared to other racing games released at this time. The soundtrack is also quiet as I am so often finding in racing games, like they don't want you to hear it. The cockpit view has also been removed from this game. Overall its a better game than the first but I was thankful when it was all over as it was quite the chore towards the end. The most expensive vehicle wasn't all that special either and I should have gone for the fastest Safari class as I find that class much easier to handle than all the others. Going for fastest truck would have been the opposite and been a hindrance to me I think with a fast vehicle that handles like crap. The game closes with images of the development team.
