Player's Review

Formula One 2001, Published by Sony and developed by Studios33. There second F1 game following F1 99. The PS1 game was only released in the PAL (EU) region. The game uses a high res 512x Horizontal mode so you may want to aspect correct the video to 16:9 to get the original tv aspect.

Like F199, the driving/physics model I find is too tricky to work with even with all driving aids enabled so I have avoided Championship mode and instead just recorded Arcade mode. However I may attempt Championship mode later as it is very slightly easier to work with than 99 and 2000. The game looks very nice and is quite smooth running throughout. I find the problem with the Studio33 F1 games is that they look very nice, but play badly, unless you really are into hardcore simulation mode. There does seem to be an overall lack of presentation in the Studio33 games though when compared against the efforts of Bizarre Creations and Visual Sciences.

I wasn't original going to submit this longplay as Arcade mode is pretty bad but as said above, I may expand on it at a later date. In arcade mode, the races seem to all take place at dusk/night so all the races have a brown sky instead of a nice blue and bright scenery. The handling of the cars is much more arcady than championship mode. Formula One 2000 arcade mode was more interesting in my opinion as you progressed onto more difficult tracks and higher spec cars. You also has picture unlocks as an incentive. In 2001, money is received when winning races and you can buy newer cars and upgrade them. There are 6 leagues to complete and you do need the faster powerful cars to progress. After completing all 6 leagues you get a quick win animation. Doesn't feel all that rewarding really.

At this point I was surprised with no credit roll but notice that there is a ranking system. I raced that 6th league a few more times (only the last one remained in the video) to get number 1 and then .....nothing. Were Studio33 really that lazy to not include any kind of reward for that effort that they couldn't bare to have their names in a credit roll. Well I am not that surprised as in there final game Formula One Arcade there was no intro, ending or credit roll. I feel the game was only released as a quick money making effort to get the last few coins from PS1 owners while the real money was going to be coming in from the PS2 F1 2001 game by Sony Studio Liverpool.
