Player's Review

Released in 2004 for the GameBoy Advance, Pokémon FireRed is a remake of the first generation using the added mechanics and the game engine of generation 3. As either Red or Leaf (canonically Red), you along with your rival Blue set out to explore the region of Kanto, collect the 8 gym badges around the region, and take on the Pokémon League Championship, all while helping Professor Oak learn more about the abundant pocket monsters, catching as many as possible to document their status for research purposes.

For this playthrough, I go through the standard adventure in the standard fashion. There are a couple of points where I detour and take a wrong path, namely because I don't have the appropriate HM to continue through, but I never go way out of the way. Although I do explore every region in Kanto. Off screen while grinding, I get the EXP Share, The Amulet Coin, and VS Seeker as I forgot to grab those in my normal playthrough. Speaking of grinding, there are a small handful of times where I do it. Namely in the Diglett's Cave as I try to get a Dugtrio, right before Erika's gym so I can get Pikachu thunderbolt before evolving it into Raichu, before the first trek through Victory Road, and before the Post Elite Four after the Sevii Islands.

After the main adventure but before the Elite Four, I do catch two of the legendary birds. Articuno and Zapdos, Then after the Elite Four, I went through the Sevii Islands. Rescuing Lostelle, completing the Ruby/Sapphire quest and dismantling the last of Team Rocket, catching Moltres, the last legendary bird, the Lost Cave, Tanoby Ruins to release Unown although I only catch one, and I show off the Trainer Tower although I don't win. There may be a couple areas of the Sevii Islands I missed, but those were the big ones. And I also didn't bother collecting every treasure in every cave. And, finally, I go through Cerulean Cave to catch Mewtwo, use the repel trick to encounter Raikou and catch it, and then the Elite Four and Blue who become substantially stronger after you beat the Sevii Islands. None of these were shown off in the original FireRed longplay, hence the need for replacement.
