ZX Spectrum 128k

Rambo III, developed and published by Ocean Software in 1988

"He's back and this time he's taking no prisoners. Colonel Trautman has been captured by the Russians in Afghanistan and there is only one person capable of freeing him. Negotiate the minefields, explore the Russian camp, lay boobytraps, avoid detection, free the Colonel and then... move on to the explosive climax! RAMBO IS BACK!"

Ocean is on a role at this point for Spectrum versions. Here we have a colourful well presented and well detailed game. The only real negative is lack of in game music. I remember playing a demo before having the game which was the Helicopter Chase section. I quite liked that but once owning the game, it was totally different and initially a bit of a let down. Turns out that it's level 3 in the game and was quite a while before I got to see it.

The game has been described as a poor mans metal gear. You wanna around a Russian maze stabbing every soldier you see collecting items to use in the appropriate places and eventually free the Colonel. It takes a while but once out you get to arm some bombs which is super easy as you can take loads of damage before taking the tank to shot down some helicopters. A bit more tricky as you do take a fair bit of damage and there is some similarity with this and Operation Thunderbolt where they literally fill the screen with enemies to shoot at.

The only real annoyance with the first section is that you cant walk over the bodies once they are down as you take damage in doing so. Either go round them or wait a moment.
