Spectrum 128k

"INCREDIBLY FAST ACTION! Drive hard and fast over FIVE different stages, thru DAY AND NIGHT-scream round blind bends, fly over hills, and look out for the Porsche-he's HOT!!!"

Twin Turbo V8, CodeMasters answer to outrun? The US Gold release of Outrun for the Spectrum gets a bad wrap for being slow, but I was able to enjoy for what it was as as nine years old, I didn't know any better, it was just a racing game that was a bit better then Enduro I was used to playing on the Atari 2600. Twin Turbo V8 is a much simpler looking 3d wire frame type racing game and doesnt look quite as nice but its a tiny bit faster. This was also a 2.99 budget release and for that I was able to enjoy this game too. I likely fired up Outrun more for it's music though.

Once the game is loaded it starts playing it's music which is 48k beeper music so all Spectrum owners can enjoy it and it may be the best part of the game. In game though we just have sfx and this is where the 48k owner has to get off as the in game sound is so bad. For 128k owners we get some nice engine humming sound and we can start racing. There are five stages with a slightly different look to show weather, time of day differences. We get what looks like a Ferrari in red to show it can be done (original Outrun port was fully monochrome) with two gears, a time limit and 3 lives. The objective is to get through all five stages and enter a high score. You get extra time at the start of each stage and extra lives after meeting a score threshold. The traffic is there just to get in your way and they will forcing you to slow down by breaking or lowering gears. Did I mention you get break lights too! If you get too close to the sides you are in danger of crashing costing a life.

Overall, it's an alright racing game. Not outstanding, but for £2.99 you can have some fun with this. There is not much replay ability once finished. It is just a fixed route of five stages.
