Player's Review

Spectrum 48k

Top Gun for the Spectrum released by Ocean Software in 1987

I was quite fond of this game for some reason back when I had this for my +3 all those years ago. I dont know why, but it was a simplier time when gamplay mattered more than the presentation, gfx or sound and that why I kept going back to it I think. I just enjoyed the simple dog fighting and seeing how many waves I could get through.

So present day I come across this version which was published in Spain and comes with beeper music (for better or worse) that was not in my hit squad version. It seems it was removed to make the game compatable on 128k machines even in 48k mode.

The game is fairly simple. Line up you missile and kill the opponent before it launched a missile at you. If it does you can drop a flare and hope it attracts the enemy missile. if it does its time to dogfight with bullets as its unlikely youll get a missile lock again. It takes a long time to kill with bullets and the enemy always seems to make every shot connect. When you launch your missile you can sort of steer/glitch it to hit the enemy by lining up the camera just right during flight.

In the longplay I try to see if the game has an ending, but once the plane gfx start glitching on the kill screen my fears are confirmed that it was endless. That realisation takes something away for me knowing there never was a goal to work towards apart from points/kills. Truth be told, the game is not quite as good as I remember it.
