Player's Review

Spectrum 128k

Mega Phoenix, developed by Creepsoft and published by Dinamic Software in 1991.

"Huge metallic birds fly alongside the Megaphoenix, giant winged ships loaded with deadly proton eggs. Your ship, armed with its phaser cannons and force shield must take on the entire Megaphoenix fleet and survive - the ultimate blast!"

Based on an arcade original game, this conversion comes out fairly well on the ole speccy. You can have music in game but it slows the game to a crawl. The longplay is far longer than it needs to be as the game is endless. I tried to show the difficulty ramping up in each round until all lives were lost but really the game and its content is seen after 4-5 rounds once the ship is fully leveled up.

The final stage can be really annoying due to the massive hit box your ship has and the difficulty in avoiding the downward falling shots. I think the game could have benefited from some more varied backgrounds as the game progressed. I quite like the animated ship the player controls and makes me wonder how a Xenon II would have looked on the spectrum.
