Player's Review

"SpeedX 3D for Nintendo 3DS is a stunning tunnel racer that tests a player's skill and transports him or her into a trance filled with great electronic music and hypnotic graphics. SpeedX 3D offers four game modes introducing the player to more and more challenging places at a speed that increases with every second. The question is: how far can the player go without losing concentration?"

SpeedX started life on mobile platforms including Symbian and Android released in 2010. here we have the 3DS game that allows the game to be played in actual 3D. There are many other changed of course including the overall aesthetic.

Unlike the Hyper Edition, the original 3ds release includes multiple game modes. Not that it changes much as the gameplay remains the same with minor changes in the rules. I play through the main game mode which has each tunnel split up into a stage. You can restart the game from any stage you have previously reached but the score will reset to zero. The game is split into 4 stages of twelve levels. Reaching a higher level makes the game go faster than the previous. It's along slog for sure to do it in a single sitting.

In the main game mode, you can collect shields which allow you to survive crashes as well as extra scoring for anything you crash into. You do only get one attempt though so falling off the track or crashing without shields is an instant game over. Sometimes there are bonus items along the way which can be used to slow the game down momentarily or blast everything on the screen. Getting through all 48 levels awards you with a (Spoiler alert.....) "Well Done" ...

The game has other modes including Endless (which the hyper edition is bases on) where you play one long endless stage. Survival where you play endlessly without any shield pickups and Zone which is like endless except instead of shields you have fuel pickups which constantly drain and its game over when all gone. These three modes can be played at the four available speeds and are essentially score attack.

The game looks nice in 3D as you spin around the tunnel dodging blocks but the single music track gets repetitive quickly as loops every 5 mins or so and is not even a good fit to the game. I show a very quick run of Zone mode at the end of the video.
