Player's Review

"Shift in to High gear as the Interceptor deploys on it's most dangerous assignment yet. Eliminate threats wherever your mission takes you. Elude enemy agents on land, over water and off road."

An arcade style action racer loosely based on the original 1983 arcade game and not related to the 2001 game by Paradigm / Midway. The game was also released on the PS Vita and the 3D is works well here on the 3DS game. The game consists of eighteen story missions with an additional five side missions which reward some addition vehicle upgrades but not needed to complete the game.

The game is fast and furious as you need to evade or destroy a constant onslaught of enemy's attempting to stop you completing your mission. You have multiple weapons at your disposal and unlock many more weapon options throughout the campaign. Weapons can be upgraded to deal more damage but you need to earn Intelligence points during each mission which you spend on the upgrades. Apart from the base points for completing each mission, you can earn additional points by finding dropped intel, destroying the comms van, take limited damage and beat the clock which isn't connected to the mission timer.

It's a fun game but it's not without it's problems. The controls can feel very slidey with a constant loss of traction. As you try to drive in a straight line the car will randomly pull left or right. During each mission certain enemies can drop intel but to get it you need to let go of the controls to hit the touch screen (eye) and that can land you in trouble if the enemies are after you. You may only get a split second to hit the button while the intel is on screen. If you miss it you may have to replay the level and the enemy that drops it is random. Anytime I have to remove my thumb off the buttons to hit something on the touch screen can cause problems. The biggest annoyance is the constant comms chat which pauses the game and can really throw you off when you are trying to stay alive under fire.

In the longplay, I play through the story missions with the aim of beating the time limit (which I don't always do) which means I'm not exploring routes and destroying as many enemies as I could be. Also, the comms van only appears on a set route so that also stops me exploring. Most courses have forks where i can choose to go off-road, through a building or take a boat ride. There is no auto credit roll for completing the story. I then play the side missions which reward extra devices but they are not that useful. Throughout the game I try to show most of the different weapons but it's not always practical. For instance the only useful roof weapon is the missiles as its the only weapon that can shoot down the helicopters easily and the other options are much less useful.

Overall though, its a good arcade style story based racing shooter that isn't so long that it outstays it's welcome and I miss games like this in modern times. Agent Intercept on Ps4/Ps5 may scratch that itch though. There are plenty of Driver style cut scenes with near miss explosions throughout which can be good and bad as it pulls you out of the game for a moment. The game also has its own achievement system which you see flashing up periodically during play but nothing is unlocked for completing them. One achievement requires unlocking a Paint skin which required finding other players with streetpass to unlock any of the games car skins. You don't even get one for finishing the game.
