Player's Review
"Get ready to shoot and blast your way through wave upon wave of organic mutants in this superb conversion of Tecmo's brilliant arcade game Gemini Wing."
Gemini Wing is another game I first played from issue one of Commodore Force. Together with Continental circus made a great opening cover tape.
The game is quite short. It doesn't mean it is over quickly though as even though the stages are not very long, the enemy attack patterns can be swift and quickly take you out of you are not ready for them. Due to the colours used it can also be tricky to see the enemy projectiles. they are a dark red and should ideally have been a yellow.
The title screen shows two planes. the blue one seems to be missing its tail and that the one you play in the game. The game is fullscreen with no hud as such. Just a few icons on the bottom to show what specials you carry which are fired in order by holding the fire button. The sprites are fairly large leaving you without much room to maneuver, similar to the Dragon Spirit conversion.
The game mostly plays ok until you get to the final boss. You need to hit the blue tail which you cant do with normal shots. You need to collect the falling special weapons and position your self in just the right place to hit it. Its made all the move tricky with the bosses fire rate and wings which seem to have some shady hit detection going on.
Overall this is a nice budget game which looks and sounds great and plays fairly well if your are willing to memorize when those super fast enemies are about to shoot onto the screen.
