Player's Review

"Caught on the surface of a nuclear devastated planet you have seconds to return underground before your radiation shield decays. In any other car you would stand no chance - in the Last V-8, survival is possible... Maybe!"

Possibly the shortest longplay ever. The game has two very short levels. Simply drive to the end in the time limit to win.

What am I talking about ... simply. There is nothing simple about the game. Driving the vehicle is the challenge. You move the stick towards the front and back of the car to change the speed and left and right of the car to change direction. Simple enough .. that is until you turn the car and the directions on the controller changes with it. The car has momentum so the faster you go the harder it is to steer. Now all this would be manageable if it wasn't for the time limit. If you don't get to the base in time, the bomb will go off.

In level two, there isn't a time limit as such but there are pockets of radiation that you will have to drive through. The more time you spend in the radioactive areas the faster your shield goes down. There may be a safer route but then you have to watch the fuel gauge. The game really does not want you to win. The slightest scratch on the car and it's game over.

The game is very glitchy in Vice, and I don't remember it being quite that bad back when I had an actual C64. Like many games of the era it has a cracking soundtrack but that's probably the only good thing about it but also reason enough to load it the odd time. The game doesn't really allow you to hear it in full though due to time limits.

The video shows levels one and two and it's all over quite quickly. Afterwards the car is crashed to show game over followed by letting the time run out.
