"Beat The System - crew the spaceship FireFly in a mighty battle to save our home planet from the mechanical aliens."

Bit of an odd game this one. You take control of the FireFly and star tat the beginning of a planetary grid. You can choose any row to start on and the idea is to play a level on each column before hitting the switch at the end.

The grid has a random layout when starting. You choose to jump right into a level or select the level skip arrows if one is available in your path. In doing so you get to play a game of chance. Win, you can pass through the grid space. Fail and the space gets closed off and the grid will shift. This could work to your advantage as I show in the third run where you can keep failing until the grid sets up a favourable route. Once you make it to the switch, the grid resets and starts over again! No ending, just more point scoring.

When playing a level square, you go down to the planet with a mission to destroy four generators. They level can have a maze like layout requiring the use of transporters to get around. Bare in mind that there is also a game of chance when using the transporter resulting in energy loss if you fail. In the level will be many enemies trying to drain all your energy. In order to destroy the generators you need to collect four ...things that the generators spew out and then you can hover over the generator to destroy it. Meanwhile there are enemies missiles and debris flying around trying to get you.

Once all four generators are destroyed the grid space is won and you can move onto the next. You can also choose to play more levels in the same column if you want more score. As you move in each column the levels get progressively more difficult with enemies swarming you towards the end. Occasionally fuel pods will get dropped by destroyed aliens which you need to maintain as you zoom around the level. In rare cases you may also get an energy drop which allows you to collect fluid that drips off the level walls to replenish your energy.

You of course have offensive capabilities that allow you to fire shots with some level of control at your enemies. Bare in mind that you have to wait for those shots to return to your ship before you can fire them again. There is also a collectable which i collect often and is reflected on the status bar but I never worked out what it means. The manual was no help.

Overall this isn't a bad game with good music and nice gfx but not a great game due to a maddening difficulty level with too many enemies and deadly objects on screen at once.
