Player's Review

"Only the elite pass the three phase test of the Corps of Guardian Warriors - co-ordinated fury in destruction of the mutant hordes of the underworld; supreme command skills in frantic defence against the invading alien space fleets and merciless nerve in bloody battle against the monster of the Pit of Despair. Then the final chilling decision - enter the Metamorphosis Chamber to fuse lifeforms with your vanquished foe or face your next challenge with only the powers your mortal form bestows on you."

I originally had this game as a covermount on Commodore Force (june93) which took up both sides of one of the tapes. I probably played it only two or three times before assigning it to the 'never load up again' pile. While the game is short it is also very difficult. The video makes it look short and easy but it really isn't with enemies that like to fly into you and the fact that your main weapon is almost useless requiring you to hold down fire and aim a charged shot to kill quick. With the power of modern emus and savestates I am able to longplay it and finish the game.

When defeating a wave of enemies which can be just 1 static enemy or a fleet of three or four, they will drop a collectable which can be used to activate a special weapon which include rockets, shields and energy restore. Collecting these also contributes to a collectables bonus which will help build up your score working towards an extra life after every 100000.The game has four levels split into multiple stages. You will visit boss like alien zones twice per level and these can sip away at your energy as the smaller enemies fly at you while you are trying to get an aimed shot out at the boss. Once complete the game loops back to level one after some encouraging words. There is no highscore screen.

Overall, my opinion of the game hasn't really changed. It's annoyingly difficult and not that well presented. The graphics are ok but it feels a little empty without any in game music. Also the title music isn't that great, not one of Benn Daglish's greatest tunes. Anyway, it's done now and can go back in the 'never play again' pile.
