Bagitman

Bagitman, developed by Roderick Smith and published by Aardvark Action Software in 1983. I'm guessing only released in the US.

Player's Review

Home conversion of the original arcade game Bagman. The game has only 3 screens of varying difficulty and you can move freely between them. The goal is to collect all the money bags and drop them in your wheel barrow. Once you have them all, the game starts over earning an extra life with the barrow where you left it. At a cost of $25.95 on release for the tape version, it makes you wonder how the Home Computer game industry even got traction. I'm sure if it had a UK release it would have been something like £3.99 from 'The Power House'.

The game gives the impression of being simple, just run up and down ladders collecting the bags but those two miners are fiendish and constantly chasing you down. You can some what manipulate there route but if you find your self waiting for a life, that's when they can double team you and give you nowhere to run. You get once use hammers to knock em down momentarily and can avoid them by riding the wagons. You can pick up and drop the bags where you like which is useful as you move slower while holding the bag and may need drop it in a safe spot if you know you are gonna get caught.

Overall, a very early and basic game for the C64 that has some replay ability provided you don't get frustrated with those annoyingly slow lifts and you like score attack games. Just getting through the game once is probably more than enough for me though. The music doesn't take long to get annoying and constantly swapping between music and sfx.

Interestingly, the game was released a year later in the US as Murphy by Mogul in 1984. Its had some sprite tweaks and the palette is more brown and more suited to the early old luma based C64s. It also uses a Turbo loader so the game only takes a minute instead of six to load.
