Player's Review

"Firebird have teamed up with the legendary IREM corporation, producers of the worlds most addictive arcade games, to bring you the classic coin-op conversion, Mr. Heli. It is your mission, 'Mr. Heli' our hero, to unmask 'The Muddy' who is hiding deep underground and rescue the planet. Clear all the zones including floating green islands, moving rock beds, mysterious underground temples, and much more!"

With probe Software involved we can be sure of good C64 conversion and it is. Three levels split into three stages with great gfx throughout. Gameplay can be a little frustrating with the enemies constantly trying to double team you but once you have a few weapon upgrades, they are less of a problem. Upgrades are found by shooting bricks around the scenery revealing money or and upgrade which is collected if you are holding enough money. You get plenty of lives and are returned to the beginning of the stage if you are destroyed. You lose weapon upgrades but keep the money.

The game is presented in a very strange way. Each level is a separate load on the tape. So you can jump right into level one, two or three. Levels two and three need passcodes earned at the end of the preceding level. Not the first time such a system has been used but very odd for a game released in 1989. Level one will loop over and over allowing you to build a really high score if wanted and suitable passcode awarded ready for level 2. Levels two and three always return to the passcode screen upon completion requiring a reset to load the next level. The tape version is played here. The disk version has an option to load each of the 3 levels direct on its title screen.

Overall a good c64 arcade shoot em up conversion but with a wacky loading system. Level one defaults to sfx so I left that as it is as music is default for levels two and three. I switch it back to sfx for the final boss.
