" ... THE BEST RACING GAME WE'VE EVER PLAYED - EVEN BETTER THAN OUT RUN!'
Zzap! 64 Another Day at the Arcades.

Roar onto your home computer screen in a shower of dust and rubber with Electric Dream's official licensed version of Sega's chart topping coin-up-SUPER HANG-ON-the greatest motorcycle racing game ever. The thrills are so real we even considered making a helmet compulsory! Choose from 4 skill levels and 4 separate music tracks. Expert riders can push their turbo-charged racing machines through 18 progressive stages, racing across Asia, Africa, America and Europe."

According to the back of the box, Zzap 64 (A leading C64 games magazine) stated that Super Hang-On is better than outrun. I cant be sure what version they are referring to but it certainly cant have been the C64 conversion.

The game is split into four routes selectable at the first title screen. Each route is a separate load and not referenced by the others so getting a high score in one wont be picked up in the others. At the start of each route you can choose one of four tunes to play. For the longplay I show each of the four tunes across the four routes.

The looks janky right from the start before we have even started moving but once we get going , the game feels like a spectrum port gone wrong. The track moves in a slow and sluggish way with the opponent bikers swerving all over the place in an effort to slow you down. When yu have enough speed you can get into high gear and you really want to stay in this high gear as long as possible as the time limit can get real tight as you progress. There's no real sense of speed other than the bikers flying into you and you need to be careful not to crash as if you do, you may as well restart.

Sometimes if you attack the corners at a certain angle, the track will very jarringly shift causing you to instantly fly into something slowing you down massively. Some really tight corners will slow you down and ideally you stay as close as you can to the corner maintaining speed without hitting the curb and be ready to high gear it out of there. Once a track is complete you get a super score and can replay if you want. If you want to try a different route, you have to reload the game. How this is better than outrun I do not know. Outrun C64 is a masterpiece compared to this game.
