Sonic Boom

One of the better shoot em ups on the C64 that could have been better still with more work on its presentation. The initial load and title screen doesn't really do much to sell the game but once in game, you are presented with a nice colourful gfx and music+sfx which whilst nothing special, you don't get often.

During the game you can collect support ships and smart bombs which are bigger the more support you have. If you are killed, you lose all support but the game continues on from where you died. At the end of each level is a boss ship and the first one is probably the most difficult as you are not fully powered up yet and this boss means to end you as it fire yellow dots of death at you at high speed.

So overall, a reasonable game on the c64 but it can be overly challenging to the point of frustration, much like Flying Shark due to the small hi speed shots and not much room to move. Then there is the enemies coming at you from in front and behind at the same time which becomes more of a problem as the game progresses. The game loops back to level one after completion and I show game over in the second play.
