Player's Review

"All is not well with the world! A great war had devastated the land and a nefarious power had established an empire where the good people were like slaves. Using the secret martial art of Jet-kwon-do, the mighty Aarzak and his 2 companions Alyssa and Max, went to battle against Duke, Master of Tae Kung Fu. Although they were victorious and peace reigned, the 3 most evil warriors escaped. One day they staged a surprise attack on the city and captured Alyssa, taking her to the land of the unknown. Aarzak followed her, trail and prepared to fight the 3 seemingly invincible heroes. Can Aarzak break the secret of Jet-kwon-do and learn how to defeat these foes and rescue Alyssa? Fight the "Last Battle" and find out!"

The C64 game was developed by Jon Williams and right away from the loading system, the presentation and especially the sound effects you will notice the similarity with his other games Shadow Dancer and First Samurai.

The game controls well enough and the collision detection is very forgiving allowing hits that don't visually connect although sometimes it works the other way where enemy projectiles hit you without visually connecting. It may come down to who fired first! You only get one button to punch and kick and more often than not it will pull out the one you don't want. The boss battles are fairly easy. Your kicks are super powerful compared to punches and you can just stand there take the damage and kill the boss quick with kicks if you want to as your energy will refill afterwards.

The game has an odd mix of hires and low res sprites making up the background and some of the characters. Navigating the map can be odd at times as it requires you to enter the stage from the correct side of the screen to converse with a character. Landing on the right spot at the right time will award energy. best not get to that space to early when you don't need it. Once you have killed enough enemies you will level up your power allowing you to enter the labyrinth stage. The labyrinth does have some hidden doors allowing you to fight some enemies for energy, very useful. The goal is to rescue a character and move onto the next chapter.

Overall, it well done C64 game. Its missing some gameplay music just as the other Jon Williams games which takes the shine off it but it plays well enough as a scrolling beat em up adventure with a narrative throughout.
