Player's Review
"Rescue Esmerelda from her castle stronghold. Featuring: The Ramparts, Knights. Arrows. Fireballs, the Pit and of course the Bells!"
This C64 conversion of the Arcade looks on the surface quite basic looking like it's running in character mode but plays faithfully to the original. There are fifteen stages of wall jumping to cross with the aim of reaching the bell at the end of each. if you reach five in a row without dying, you get a super bonus to your score. If the simple act of jumping isn't challenging enough, there is a knight right behind you ready to take a life and he is relentless in performing his duty. Each stage of the wall gets progressively more difficult as the obstacles range from jumping over spikes, dodging arrows and fireballs, sometimes all three! Of course the real danger is when they come from right behind you as soon as you start!
The longplay shows an initial run through all stages to rescue Esmerelda. The game is technically endless but the game does continue on with raised difficulty in each successive loop. I have shown two loops and a brief go at the third. enough to show that the wall jumping difficulty hasn't gone up too much but the knight becomes ever more determined to take you down. The controls are responsive but the jumping requires some precision to clear the gaps.
Overall, a short and basic game and not a whole lot happening in terms of music or sfx but not out of the ordinary for a C64 game 1984 and if you are a fan of the arcade, this home port is well done and might save you some coins.
