Player's Review

"HUNK STUDBUCKLE'S brother is trapped in Nightmare Mansion. He must destroy the spirits of evil if they are to meet this side of hell! Does he fail or succeed? His fate is up to you..."

When ghosts need busting and someone needs rescuing, who better than to send in Rambo! At least that's what the cover depicts. The second game from the Oliver Twins following Super Robin Hood. Another roaming adventure that has you collecting items whilst fending off the demons. Again, you have only a single life and you need to keep your energy up by collecting the potions and again using them strategically as you will be backtracking and may need them later. any demons that appear on screen will sap your energy so either get out quick are start blasting. An innovative feature for the time is that in two player mode, one controls the movement and the other, the weapon making it a fun co-op game rather than a massively frustrating single player experience. Weapon movement carries inertia so you need to handle with some finesse or over shoot the target,

The C64 conversion like many from Codemasters seems to be a half effort with elements missing, bad collision detection and frustrating control. It kind of resembles the Amstrad original but even more frustrating to play. You will likely spot in the video that when trying to climb, it gets all juddery as though it has stopped reading the control input. Jumping off of ladders is a problem as well as placement of energy sapping blood at the top of ladders. Skeletons and skulls are not solid so they ending up sapping energy as you slowly slide through them and the blood can be super deadly as it slows you down. Then there is the no effort title music that isn't even as long as the original beeper tune and no ending text. Some elements in the levels are missing most notably when going to the last item. No Speech and constantly nagging info panels.

Overall, this is not a game I find enjoyable and certainly not the c64 version. I had this for spectrum and c64 on one of the Quattro collections and it's I would rewind past for something else. The level design which has you backtracking and constant energy sapping put me off this one. It's unfortunate as the way Super Robin Hood works is more forgiving if you plan the route right.
