Player's Review
"WOW-REAL POWERBOAT RACING! Choose from catamaran or monohull craft - Simultaneous two playe action - work as a team or individually. Full throttle over the jump, avoid the helicopters, depth charges, Police boats, hovercraft, whirlpools, BRILLIANT! Ram your mate onto the rocks! Ahhh! Made it! Now it's onto night racing..."
Not a typical spectrum port looking very much like a chunky C64 game. There are eight races taking place during the day and again at night for a total of sixteen races. In between them are bonus checkpoint races for some extra points. You start with the three lives and can pick up more. The levels are all short and can be memorised and you can race them as fast or as slow as you want within reason. There is a time limit that isn't too tight that you must finish in else it's game over. There is also fuel which if it runs out will cost you a life as well as crashing.
Speed needs to be managed so that you don't lose time as well as having room to manoeuvre to collect pickups. There are jumps but make sure to hit at the right speed else you will land on a building. while in the air you save on fuel. Your speed is locked whilst traveling in tunnels. You do get a few mines you can drop in front of enemy but it's not the focus of the game. Colliding with them will just knock you around.
The longplay shows going through all tracks , day and night as well as bonus sections. The game does abruptly end after night races with no ending or highscore table. After completion I show the other boat as well as game over.
Overall, it's not a bad little budget racing game, better in two player as is usually the case as you battle for the limited resources. Not too much time was invested though as there is no high score table or end game congrats screen and the music and sfx have all been taken from Red Max! I do feel like the developer probably should have tried the Spectrum game first though as this game seems to have deviated from powerboat racing somewhat.
