Player's Review
"SPIKE's cartoon adventure in TRANSILVANIA! Explore the village and mysterious CASTLE, RAT infested KITCHENS, SPOOKY hallways and bedrooms, towering BELFRY, a secret REBEL UNDERGROUND and much more! Meet ARBOLD the wizard, Farmer PILES, the INNKEEPER, and bribe the JAILERS! INCREDIBLE CARTOON ACTION!"
A fairly short little adventure that has you playing as Spike who looks remarkably like Hagar the Horrible in the game (not on the front cover). Incidentally the game has three titles as they differ on the cover, loading screen and title screen. Were going with what it was sold as and id say recognised as.
The longplay shows a full playthrough rescuing the prisoners firstly by traversing the screen collecting the items and using in the right place. There is some challenging areas where you need to get past some armed guards who sap your energy if you collide. Rats will also sap energy and once it depletes you lose a life. The bats can be really annoying as they fly towards you and again sap your energy and can be difficult to avoid. Lose all four, you are dead! There is some chicken at various points to refill your health but the poisoned apples must be avoided. I keep hold of the crucifix as it kills the ghosts. You can just leave it in the room though to auto kill them but it is needed in two places.
Overall, a nice little cartoon adventure that's not too difficult thanks to having multiple lives and a map that's a reasonable size to remember. A nice music track plays throughout and the gfx are colourful and detailed enough and not just a quick spectrum port. Some of the enemies are in annoying places making them seemingly unavoidable costing you health which isn't a good gameplay mechanic where you can even avoid the situation with good timing.
However there is a bug (that's works to your benefit) that requires you to find only six prisoners instead of seven as the forth one is counted twice. I show the prison not visited at the end of the video. I avoid this one in the main run as the bats are seemingly unavoidable and sap your energy away. There was a weird gfx glitch with the dog when he kills you so I left that in to show. One of the prisoners may have four eyes!
