Player's Review

"OLLI went down to his garage and was frightened to see that someone had disassembled his beloved automobile. He burst into tears and wept for a long time. With a loud sob he took a candle and rushed through the castle to find all the parts of his wonderful car..."

A cartoon style adventure and will last a while even when you have the solution. A lot here 2.99 for a budget game. This version is clearly a Spectrum conversion but still looks nicely detailed overall even though it's a little less colourful. There is no music and not much in the way of sfx either. Whilst the cover clearly shows two characters , during play it is just you as Olli that you see in the game. At the start of the game you choose which car you want to build and then which solution to play. There are four routes to choose from each differing in where the car parts are. Route 4 is being played here.

Gameplay involved moving between screens via the available doors. There are not many screens but as you are constantly moving between top and bottom of the house, it takes a while to traverse and this can diminish any sense of enjoyment as you are constantly moving back and forth on the same screens. Some doors may even flip between different locations which doesnt help when you are trying to map the game in your mind. The challenge is staying alive. Although there is a time limit shown via the candle light, there are enemies on each screen ready to take you down. You get a few lives, but they can go fast but fortunately there are more to find. A tiny fall will also kill you and each time you respawn you appear at the last door you came through.

The Primary goal is to restore your car in the garage. First you need to find a Magnifying glass and a locate the car part. Once found, locate a spanner and go to the garage to fit the part. Collect em all to win the game.

Overall, this is a chore to play even if you are a fan of these walking, collecting adventure games. Constantly backtracking and remembering which doors to take whilst not slipping on the ladder can take its toll on your enjoyment. At the end of the game I add the Game Over screen

Differences compared with the spectrum version include how the doors work, one of these versions may be bugged. Whist the screens are in the same order, the way the doors connect on each screen are seemingly not. In the C64 game, there is a key I could not reach but the door it goes too is thankfully not important. Maybe dependent on the route chosen, I don't know. In the Spectrum game you don't return to the door when taking a hit and you start with loads of lives. A huge quality of life difference is that the C64 game shows you where the hidden car part is while holding the appropriate magnifying glass.
