Player's Review
"OK Super Speedway rider, you've been racing your bike on the streets for ages and you reckon you're good enough to take on the rest of the world! Start off in the local league, then if you're a winner, the national league, it's getting tougher, but you might make it through to the continental league - then, your big chance, The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP! The very best riders from around the globe have been waiting for a chance like this too, so they're gonna fight just as hard as you to be number one!"
A deceptively simple racer that has you going around an oval track racing three additional riders. There are four championships and four races with in each. Through the four races you will start at each of the four starting positions with the inside track being where you want to stick to in order to maintain speed. In each race you get one turbo boost to help keep at the front of the pack. Any collisions will slow you down and potentially send you to the back of the pack and the other riders don't fight each other for position.
At the start you can select from multiple difficulty levels. The main difference is how the bike controls although it may (not confirmed) limit how far you can progress so I just went for pro difficulty where bike control is crazy difficult. You need to make tiny left/right adjustments in order to stay on the fastest part of the track. If you just hold left you will slide right out and scrape the sides getting nowhere.
Overall, its quite a basic game and a bit repetitive going around an oval sixteen times. But it's not without challenge and the other riders wont give an inch on later levels requiring some strategic and dirty playing in order to block the riders from gaining more score than you as they are forced to slow down of they run in the back of you.
Additional info: The game was not re-released standalone by Codemasters. The compilation it self can be considered super rare with little info on it and I don't currently see it in preservation projects. The Spectrum compilation is ultra rare with no known preservation of it and it has a version of Slicks not released separately yet to be found. In 1993, the market for Spectrum was gone and the C64 hanging by a thread so probably wasn't made in a significant number.
